What is an MDM?

A Mobile Device Management (MDM) system is software that helps companies securely manage and control devices like laptops and phones. It allows IT teams to remotely install apps, enforce security rules, and monitor devices to keep company data safe and compliant.

What options are there to enroll Devices?

There are two main ways to enroll devices into an MDM system:

  • Microsoft Autopilot - Zero Touch Deployment: Devices are automatically configured and enrolled when turned on for the first time, requiring no manual setup. This process uses Windows Autopilot with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) registration, making setup fast and seamless.

  • Entra Out of the Box Experience (OOBE) - Zero Touch Deployment: This method is recommended by Windows and it probably the simplest as users enroll their devices during the Windows setup process by signing in with corporate credentials and connecting to the company’s cloud domain.

  • Manual Enrollment: For devices that can’t use Autopilot or OOBE—like older or third-party devices—users or IT staff install the MDM agent manually by downloading the installer and signing in with corporate credentials. Fleet provides easy step-by-step instructions to help with this process. In this article, you can also find the guide to manually install the MDM.

How can I enroll Devices with Microsoft Autopilot?

Fleet makes Zero Touch enrollment straightforward by managing the entire process for you:

Step 1: Set up your Microsoft Autopilot account: Fleet helps you register and verify your account if you don’t already have one.

Step 2: Connect your Autopilot account to Fleet’s MDM: Fleet securely links your Autopilot with the MDM platform.

Step 3: Register your devices: Devices purchased through Fleet or participating OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are automatically registered in your Autopilot account.

Step 4: Create and assign enrollment profiles: Set up profiles on Microsoft Autopilot that configure apps, security settings, and policies for your devices.

Step 5: Power on your devices: When users turn on their new devices and connect to the internet, enrollment happens automatically without any manual steps.

With Fleet’s support, your devices are ready to use immediately with consistent configurations and security.

    • The user opens the downloaded file (AirwatchAgent.msi) from their downloads folder.
    • When prompted, they click “Yes” to allow the application to make changes.
    • They accept the license terms and proceed by clicking “Next” and then “Install.”
    • After installation completes, they click “Finish.”
  3. Workspace ONE Configuration
    • In the configuration window:
    • Enter the Server Address and Group ID provided in the installation email.
    • Enter the professional email and password when prompted.
    • The MDM installation will finalize automatically after a few minutes.
  4. Troubleshooting (if needed)
    • Check internet connection
    • Confirm user has administrator rights on the device
    • Contact Fleet Support through the Cockpit portal if problems persist

This process ensures devices are securely enrolled and managed.

What can companies do with an MDM?

An MDM lets companies remotely manage their devices from anywhere. IT teams can push updates, enforce security policies, and wipe data remotely if needed. This ensures devices are secure and compliant while reducing the need for hands-on IT support.
