The M2 Chip and All Its Differences from the Previous One**

With technology advancing ever faster, it's no surprise that the M2 chip surpasses its older sibling. Without offering as drastic a leap as the Intel > M1 transition, this new brain provides a considerable boost to Apple's new range, at all levels.

Better Graphical Performance

Graphically, the M2 chip offers a performance increase of 25% to 35%, depending on its power.

Its GPU now reaches up to 10 cores, two more than the previous model. This finally allows Apple to enter the world of gaming, without thereby becoming a benchmark in this field. It's clear that Apple has long been rejected in the world of gamers.

An Increase in Computing Power

Let’s get to the heart of the matter: the processor. The nerve center of any computer, they have always been the pride of the manufacturer. Fast and tireless, the brains of its numerous devices have played a fundamental role in the development of Apple’s reputation in the professional tools department.

Moving from the 7-8 CPU cores of the M1 to the 10-12 that the various M2 variants present, the CPU performance increase is 18%. In total, the M2 represents a 40% increase in operations, which is a considerable speed boost. Especially considering there are only two years of difference between the new chip and the old one.

Greater Memory Bandwidth

The second key aspect is the RAM. Essential for the proper functioning of a large number of professional use programs, it must be up to par with the other components.

The M2 fulfills this promise with 50% more memory bandwidth. This not only allows for more efficient data processing but also faster communication between the memory and other parts of the computer.

Much Longer Battery Life

The arrival of the M series chips marked a significant improvement in a criterion often criticized in Apple: battery life. The arrival of the M1 had already eliminated this weak point by radically changing the rules of the game.

The M2 chip also enjoys a very good degree of autonomy. Built on the foundations laid by its older sibling, it has an even better track record: for the same amount of energy, its survival time is greater.

Improved ProRes

For those unfamiliar with ProRes, don’t panic! This Apple-owned video compression format, invented in 2007, continues to advance on the path to better performance.

Now allowing for the processing of files with excellent resolution (8K), it represents a significant advancement for video editors using Final Cut, the reference software for several Macs.

Which Models Are Equipped with the M2 Chip?

Now that the M2 chip has been introduced, let's see where it can be found.

MacBook Pro M2

Launched in 2006, the MacBook Pro range lives up to its name. It strives to offer powerful laptops that are at the forefront of professional tools.

The latest MacBook Pro with the M2 chip is no exception. With it, you can run the most demanding software without any difficulty. Editing, music, animation, modeling... you can move through all these worlds at your leisure.

On the other hand, although it is quite light and compact, it is not exactly a companion for long trips. The duration of its battery, about 8 hours, can sometimes be insufficient.

MacBook Air M2

The MacBook Air M2 opts for a slightly more balanced solution. With slightly lower performance than its predecessor, it is designed primarily as a companion for users who travel frequently.

True to its name, it is extraordinarily light. Objectively, it is probably the most easily transportable laptop on the market. Its globetrotting nature is underscored by a larger battery capacity. You can expect a good day of autonomy.

iPad Pro M2

Even more compact than the two previous products, the iPad is undoubtedly the reference tablet in the market. With a large screen and great responsiveness, it is a device that has never lacked for much.

However, this tablet has also jumped on the M2 bandwagon, becoming a touch tool more powerful than many computers on the market. Easy to use, well-designed, it has found its main market among graphics enthusiasts. It's perfect for any software for drawing, photo editing, or animation you might need. It's great to use with a stylus, and offers a boost to any creative project.

How to Choose Between the Three?

What is certain at the end of this article is that these are devices of great technical quality. In their own way, they each represent an excellent compromise, and it is prudent to say that there is no real best choice here.

However, there are some personal criteria that can help you decide, starting with the need for performance. If your business activities can be performed without a war machine, it would be somewhat excessive to opt for the MacBook Pro. It really is a workhorse, and it is necessary to understand this. For lighter workers, the Air option, or the iPad, is more than enough.

Your sector of activity can also be a factor. While the iPad is indispensable for all graphic designers, it is probably less suitable for video editing than the two Macs, which excel in this art.

As we have already mentioned, battery issues are also a factor to consider when choosing the product. If you travel a lot, the Macbook Pro is probably a good idea to cross off your list.

What is certain is that this M series marks a renaissance for Apple products, which show their best colors. More powerful and more durable, this new range fulfills all its promises.
